Wow! Genuine Japanese Okonomiyaki - a fantastic dish that is very hard to find - really tasty and very authentic!
Not fond of Okonomiyaki (or anything made of cabbage), but have been very pleased with the food at this restaurant, and I've been there at least six times. The owners are Chinese, so don't expect a true Japanese experience, but let's face it, real Japanese restaurants are becoming a rare thing in Vancouver. (Hell, even in Japan, many restaurants are owned and run by Koreans.) What Modern Club has going for it is A high-quality food, well prepared (the sashimi is the best I've had in years outside VERY expensive restaurants), and B very personable service. The prices are mid- to high-range, but when eating sushi/sashimi, I'd rather pay more than find myself choking down 2nd rate fish. Don't go if you don't like a friendly and informal atmosphere - the couple's young child is paraded around the restaurant at regular intervals.
I loved Modern Club- it isn't Tojo's- but it has a great atmosphere and pretty yummy food. A great place to go for soemesushi, noodles and saki.
